Early study for a Buddhist school in the mountain Unbuilt, for Archidio office, Taipei


Facing our land, the sun. On our back, a forest is covering the valley. The forest is dense and doesn’nt leave much room for a building, in fact the valley seems too great for us. We’ll have to make ourselves very small. No need to compete. The building will welcome what is given to it: a view on the sun rising every morning, and a place in the middle of the trees.

The horizontality: It reflects the great modesty of bouddhism thinking and our modesty towards the environnement; as well as the bouddhist interest for the autonomous capactity of human spirit to be awkenened.

The symetry: at least on the east side, as it responds to the context – to the valley and to the sky. Balance, stability provided by the symetry could support and express the buddhist lifestyle and complement the unstable nature around.

So by changing with the sky and the trees, the corridor operates the necessary transition between the sleeping spaces and the common ones.

About the corridor: – The corridor is a recurring space in public architecture: all the spaces refer to it instead of to each other – thus all the spaces are equal to each other and are linked to the community. – It is also a recurring space in religious architecture (ex: christian cloisters) as it is dedicated to the action of walking; the state of introversion, meditation. – the corridor is a space of transition: from solitude to community, from inside to outside, from artificial to natural.


在我們的用地前面有太陽. 背後則有森林覆蓋著山谷. 茂密的森林沒有留下太多的空地給人們, 然而這渾然天成的大山谷,對我們來說,是如此的太美好, 或許在這天然之中我們縮小自己,不與之競爭崇敬的共存著. 我們的建築要歡迎這環境帶來的美好: 每天升起的太陽景色,有著樹木圍繞的地點.

水平: 水平反映了佛教思想的端莊,以及我們對環境的莊重. 同時象徵佛教思維裡, 非盲目崇拜在我們之上的偶像,而是應該人們自身覺醒的精神.

對稱: 在建築的東方,反映了山谷和天空的天然平衡, 而對稱的建築, 訴說了佛教生活的嚴謹. 人人之間的平等.

走廊從筆直進而蜿蜒, 是從天空的素淨,到自然生意盎然的景色漸變, 同時也是休息,到活動空間的轉換.

– 走廊在宗教建築中建設的很多,因為走廊是可以讓人們思考. 沉澱.自省的空間.

– 走廊是一個轉換空間:從私密的到交流的,從人造空間到自然空間.
