Screen printing + painting series, 2022
The paper houses artworks are an ongoing series, stemming from the unaffordable housing crisis, in Taiwan and abroad, which is especially difficult for young generations.
These artworks are a reinterpretation of the Taiwanese ritual of burning paper houses to give a home for one’s ancestors. Instead, I ask: shouldn’t we burn paper houses for ourselves?
Having previously studied architecture, I set out to design paper houses to sell at art markets, which the public could then fold and burn at home.
Many people didn’t, preferring to keep the houses as they were, as flat images, a dream not yet realized.
I later developed the concept into large formats made with stencil and serigraphy, for a solo exhibition in Kaoshiung (Pier 2).
The paper house concept was also the topic of workshops with highschool students.
